What program is taught at the Mid-Atlantic School of Sleep Medicine and Clinical Research?

The Mid-Atlantic School of Sleep Medicine (MASSM) and Clinical Research is an accredited educational provider of the A-STEP Introductory Course. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) developed the A-Step program to promote the standardization of sleep technologist education and training. This course gives students the foundational understanding and practical skills that are essential for a successful career in the profession of sleep technology.

Who enrolls in A Step?

New entrants to the profession who need a basic understanding of sleep, sleep disorders and sleep technology. Beginning in 2010, this includes all on-the-job trainees who are candidates for the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT ™) Exam.

How long is the course?

This program offers 80 hours of classroom and hands-on training as required by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Classes are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

What are the requirements to enroll in the program?

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Students should also have excellent communication skills as well as basic math and basic computer competency.

Do I need a medical field background?

No, it is not necessary to have any health field experience.

Will I be registered when I complete the two weeks?

No, if you are a newcomer to the medical field and do not have previous medical experience, the requirements to become a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist are:

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent
  2. Completion of an 80-hour A-STEP Introductory Course(A-STEP- Part 1)
  3. You must pass the online A-STEP exam from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)
  4. Completion of 18 online Self-Study Modules (A-STEP - Part 2).These are open book self-paced tests
  5. After you work for 9 months as a sleep tech trainee, you must take the national registry exam administered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) and earn the credential of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT ™)
